How to Check If a Repair Is Covered by Your Warranty

Start with the exact warranty documents you signed

Gather the factory warranty booklet, any extended service contract, and any prepaid maintenance plan (PMP) from your glovebox, purchase folder, or dealer portal. Contracts vary wildly by tier. The brand alone (Ford Protect, Honda Care, CarShield) is not enough. You need the plan name, effective date, current mileage caps, and deductible.

Match every line item on the quote to a contract section

Service advisors write quotes in shop shorthand. Translate each line into the contract's language before you agree.

• Powertrain repairs (engine, transmission, drive axle): usually covered under Powertrain and higher tiers.
• Wear items (brakes, wipers, bulbs, clutch discs): usually excluded, with exceptions for tire-and-wheel or bumper-to-bumper coverage.
• Scheduled maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, coolant, filters): covered only by a PMP or a bumper-to-bumper plan that names it.
• Diagnostic fees: often waived if the underlying repair is covered. Ask.

Verify the shop has actually filed the claim

A quote is not a claim. Ask the service advisor, in writing, whether they have submitted the work to your warranty administrator for authorization. If they haven't, request that they do it before starting any billable work. If they refuse, that is a red flag.

Get the denial in writing

If coverage is denied, request the denial in writing with the contract section cited. Most legitimate denials have specific contract language behind them. Vague denials ("that's a wear item", "that's not covered") without a section reference are worth pushing back on.

Escalate to the administrator directly

You are the contract holder, not the shop. Call the administrator listed on the front of your contract and open your own claim. Many disputes get resolved in your favor when you go around a shop that would rather bill you at retail.
